R.E.M. - Accelerate

R.E.M. have named their new album 'Accelerate'.

The band's 14th studio LP, the follow-up to 2004's 'Around The Sun', will be released in April.

The band worked on the album in Vancouver and Dublin with Bloc Party and Snow Patrol producer Jacknife Lee.

During their stay in Dublin last summer, the band played five sold-out ‘working rehearsal’ dates at the Olympia Theatre, previewing tracks from the record.

Confirmed tracks for the album include 'Until The Day Is Done', 'Living Well Is The Best Revenge', 'Mr Richards', 'Staring Down The Barrel Of Middle Distance', and 'I'm Gonna DJ', a regular in the band's set on their 2004/2005 world tour.

Frontman Michael Stipe said the guitar-driven LP is "the fastest we've made in 20 years".

He told Q: "I think the songs on 'Around The Sun' are great, but in the process of recording we lost our focus as a band. Now, that focus is back. And it's razor sharp."

After two consecutive albums dominated by mid-tempo fare, R.E.M. gets back to its stripped-down, fast-paced rock roots on "Accelerate," due April 1 via Warner Bros. The 11-track set, which gets in and out in a lightning-quick 34 minutes and change, is led by the single "Supernatural Superserious."

Opener "Living Well's the Best Revenge" sets the tone, with a prominent lead guitar figure from Peter Buck, thumping, melodic bass lines and backing vocals from Mike Mills and a rapid stream of lyrics from frontman Michael Stipe. The track almost seems like a musical cousin to "Just a Touch" from 1986's "Life's Rich Pageant."

The up-tempo approach extends to "Supernatural Superserious," a video for which was shot earlier this week on Manhattan's Lower East Side. "You realize your fantasies are dressed up in travesties / enjoy yourself with no regrets," Stipe instructs on the track, which should hit radio sometime next month.

Elsewhere, "Hollow Man" begins as a piano ballad but quickly morphs into a revved-up chorus, while "Horse To Water" is a noisy, angular rocker with the unmistakable stamp of R.E.M.'s pre-major label days.

Among the slower departures are "Houston," which is vaguely reminiscent of the vintage "Swan Swan H," and the politically charged "Until the Day Is Done" ("The verdict is dire / the country's in ruins," Stipe sings).

A number of the "Accelerate" tracks were premiered last summer during "working rehearsal" shows in Dublin. The album was produced by Jacknife Lee, best known for his work with Snow Patrol and U2.

Laut STZ kommt Accelerate am 31.03. in die Läden. Hab aber auch schon vom 28.03. gehört.

Ja, in Deutschland 28.03, weil wir hier bekanntlich CDs Freitags bereits bekommen.

Mit dem neuen Album "Accelerate" hätten R.E.M. wesentlichbesser zu RAR/RIP gepasst als mit dem "Schlafalbum" "Around the sun".

Schade, werden heuer wohl nicht RAR/RIP bespielen!


Das neue Album rockt aber gewaltig! War bei einem der 5 Rehearsal-Konzerte im Juni/Juli 2007 in Dublin dabei und YES, REM are a rock-band againg!

ich hab in die ganze cd schon mal reingehört.

fällt in die "monster"-schiene... ziemlich rau. ziemlcih gut. die ersten drei-vier songs gehen ziemlich gut ab. dann wieder bisserl ruhiger...

Dann wird sie mir definitiv gefallen , wie so ziemlich alles. Habe schon mal wie z.B. hier Kritiken zum neuen Album gelesen. Ein Album in der Richtung Monster oder New Adventures in Hifi würd ich schon sehr geil finden. Naja es ist ja nicht mehr lange hin
