Ok ;p now that I suckered you in with a German title .. it wouldnt be an Aggie post if it wasnt in English .. so fire up LEO my friends.

Im a Masters student here in america at a school that is obvious if you check my screenname or profile. I study Electrical Engineering, particularly power electronics (inverters, rectifiers, current conditioners etc), motor drives (BLDC, SR, Induction stuff, other PM usw usw) and advanced vehicles systems (applications of drives and electronics to mobile platforms).

I plan to do my master's thesis research and an internship in Germany next year and maybe even longer.. for sure May-Nov 2007, so what Im interested in is where is better?

RWTH Aachen (Dr. De Doncker's group) or
TUM Muenchen (Dr. Schroeder's group)

In both cases I would look to do an internship with the Elektroantrieb section of Siemens, as that is my research area.

So what is a better?

Please consider
1. Cost of living
2. Availability of internship (praktikum positions at Siemens) obviously this favors Muenchen
3. Proximity to fun, RaR, my Ringrocker pals, Southside Festival etc.
4. Quality of the university, in particular their Electrical engineering

Thank you for any help, Id be curious what other students have to say about what I plan to do.

I might also do a second internship then with Liebherr on their large Siemens AC drives for their mining equipment after my internship with Siemens, I am not sure as of yet, however that would then last from Nov 07 to Apr 08. That would put me for sure in Lindau, all the way down on the Bodensee next to Austria and Switzerland, but ca 100km from my girlfriend's hometown Smiley

Thank you again Smiley

Huhu Aggie Smiley

I dont know so much about electrical engineering, but what i know is that the RWTH Aachen has a very god reputation in Electrical Engineering.
Well both Unis are nearly always in the top 5 of german uni rankings.

But München might be the most expensive town in Germany, especially considering rents.

The University of Kaiserslautern (aka Kaiserslaughtern Smiley ) has also a good reputation although it's a small university, perhaps better than RWTH Aachen

The distance to the Southside-Festival is about 260km(?), the distance to Rock am Ring is about 200km(?), so KL is situated in the middle of the two Smiley

hi randy,

you should try to write german Smiley

1. the first point ist very important point.
i think münchen ist most expensice place in gernay and its very diffuclt to find a flat, an when you habe the luck to find one, its very expensive...

this point goes to aachen Smiley

2. well, ic cann't say something to this point...

3. aachen ist next to bonn / köln, you know there live many ringrockers, next to rock am ring (therefor münchen is next to southside-festival..., but there is a southside festival in the north too.... its called hurricane..)

4.
here ist a focus uni-ranking click

but you should not pay too much attention to this...this ranking includes all courses/ (studiengänge)

at last, we told you last year, that all the bayrisch people are gay...

about 50% of the bayrisch people vote for porn-eddi

Compared to american politics this man is quite on the left side Smiley
But i think that shouldn't be an argument for or agains München or Aachen Smiley

Yes dont pay too much attention to all those rankings. The can give you an overview and show you a very basic trend.
But these rankings never can tell whether Dr. De Doncker's group or Dr. Schroeder's group is better !

Thats right Aachen is a lot cheaper than Munich.
I study in Aachen, i might be able to help you looking for a flat, if you want to.

Shame on me, i can't say a lot about it, too.
There are Siemens places of buisiness in Aachen ( Aachen) and in Köln( Köln) , I'm sure you could get an internship there, but I'm not sure if they're working in your branch of studies in Köln and Aachen. (i hope you get the sense of this sentence, i'm not sure if the sentence is correct in english, `cause my english isn`t the best in the world as you may have recognized Smiley )
And for the sake of completeness: sure there is a place of buisiness in München, too (München)

I was accepted to study for this fall in the Masters-Plus Program in Electrical Engineering at Uni Kaiserslautern, however I decided to stay here at Texas A&M instead, the DAAD decided not to give me graduate funding .. so I decided that it would be better to live here and continue school where I am familiar with a very internationally famous professor.

I will wait and see if de Doncker offers me, I have already been offered a place to do my research with TUM with Schroeder.

Thank everyone so far with the advice.

Oh as for everyone saying that they would offer to help me find an apartment, my Verlobte Sonja would be in front of me and doing much of that work, as she is Deutsche. But maybe she would like help too Smiley

That was very good junior and yes, it seems that they do have an Automation and Drives division in Aachen, though I guess they would since de Doncker's ISEA research lab at RWTH is one of the top Motor Drive labs in the world.

If you want to an internship at Siemens München would be the best pick.

Everything else has been said. Maybe you should read some papers of the profs to see which one fits you the most.

TexasAggie

As I suspected for Siemens,

And yes I have read the Jahresberichte from both labs, they both do pretty much everything, so as Dr. Schroeder has told me, it pretty much comes down to what PhD student I am assigned to.

I was just curious if there were any German engineering nerds out there that were familiar with their reputations within Germany.

Also my second goal has been achieved in that most everyone thinks that Aachen would be cheaper, but presently I am leaning towards Bayern and then coming up to RaR to visit my ringrocker pals.

So there has been a new development, I have been accepted now to do my research at RWTH as well. So now I will wait to see which is best and which one Siemens will let me work at.

I looked at apartments in Aachen and WOW they are certainly much cheaper than in Muenchen.

Now I have a question, how do I find an apartment in Aachen? The only good website I have found so far lists the crappy "Courtage" and I refuse to pay that shit. Im not paying someone 2.3 months of rent for posting some pictures on a webpage which took them all of 10 minutes.

Any good ideas where to start? Maybe someone can send me a local paper? ;p Im good for the cash, Ill buy you 2-3 beers at RaR and we would be even Smiley

Anyhow, I guess that is good news, as Aachen is much closer to all the RR people, however Sonja is less happy because its farther away from Schwabenland.

Oh well thats all for now, as always any information that helps me in Germany is useful.[addsig]

Ok so things are getting kind of ugly for me, because Aachen came on strong and I am highly considering going there, but I do not have an internship yet and so Im not sure how I will pay to be in Germany next year.

What would any of you students do to get an internship in Germany? Do you just call companies or use a school service to find an internship or what do you do?

Im really running out of options and I need to choose which school I go to pretty soon, in less than two weeks realistically ..

So any help on getting ideas how I would get an internship would be very useful.

Thank you

This is a real pain in the ass, maybe my situation is complicated or something but I really dont think it is.

Anyhow .. today a representative of Siemens Cooperating with Education tells me that Siemens cannot allow me to do an internship while I do my research because this is somehow against the law.

Now .. my first reaction was to say BULLSHIT! but instead I nicely asked him to explain how this was not possible so that maybe we can find a solution.

So its looking worse and worse that I can get an internship AND do my research.

Anyone know of any jobs in Aachen? Its tons cheaper there to live and Id just assume plan to go there if I cant get hooked up with a smooth deal doing both research and internship at Siemens at the same time in Munich.

And yes, I am about to the point of calling people from the Gelbe Seiten for Aachen .. I have already looked at it and looked at companies in Elektrotechnik.
