I went to a festival in Germany a while back called Rock Am Ring or something... The lineup on the mainstage was pretty good, and it sounded like it was going to be a good festival, albeit weird... it was Queens of the Stone Age, followed by Outkast, followed by The Manic Street Preachers, followed by Alanis Morrisette, followed by Radiohead. One of the weirder things was that Tool was playing on a different stage at the same time as Radiohead... Orbital was playing later, but I didn't stick around.

Anyway, I don't get it. Upon arriving, I saw two guys being carted out on stretchers from getting too drunk - before noon. Nobody seemed to notice or care, so I figured this must be nothing unusual...

I work my way into the crowd for the main stage. It's probably worth noting that the sound is completely awful. While QOTSA are playing, some guy litterally whips it out and starts pissing - in the middle of the crowded GA area. Everyone just kinda backs up a bit to get out of the way of the spray, and nobody gets really upset, so I figure this must be nothing unusual...

I saw tons of people walking around with those "beer hats" that funnel beer into your mouth as you walk around. It was like Nascar, in Germany, with good bands (who were mostly being ignored) playing through a terrible sound system.

Most people don't seem to give a shit about the music... in fact, the artist people seemed to freak out the most for was Alanis, who was fucking terrible. While Radiohead is playing, people start yelling out "play creep!" and throwing shit on the stage occasionally. The band, naturally, looked really pissed and irritated with the audience and the general setup.

Worst festival I've ever been to, and I've been to plenty bad festivals. When I told a German friend of mine that I was going to Rock Am Ring, he laughed and said "oh no! You're going to one of those stupid things?! I don't care how much you like the bands, that festival is where all the morons get together, get wasted, and act like complete dipshits. The bands hate it, everybody with half a brain hates it... don't go. They're organized and run by mindlessness... assholes... You will have a bad time."

He was right. It was a horrible time. I'm never going to a mainstream-music festival in Germany again... I'm sure playing at one must suck tremendously.

Seriously though, they should have just played without the LCD wall and been punk about it. The light show is cool and all, but you can save it for the people who are coming to see your show, not a festival audience.

Alternahead nach The Cure wäre cool.
